Makerere University has a duty of care to do no harm and promote the wellbeing of all students, staff, and other University community stakeholders.
It seeks to enhance the University environment to make it more secure, inclusive, and ethically sound for all stakeholders.
With this, a comprehensive Safeguarding Policy was developed and approved by the University Council in April 2024.
The policy stipulates the University’s actions to embed appropriate safeguarding measures into all institutional activities and processes in order to:
- Identify, detect, and swiftly act on safeguarding risks;
- prevent the occurrence of harm;
- provide mechanisms for reporting all allegations or incidents that have occurred;
- respond appropriately to all reported incidences; and,
- continuously monitor, evaluate and learn from practices and experiences of managing safeguarding concerns.
The Policy also stipulates the responsibilities for the Students, Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff, Hostel owners, Contractors and any other person that accesses the University premises.
The MakSafeSpace e-reporting system has been established as a complimentary reporting channel, to provide for confidential reporting of all safeguarding risks and incidences. This can be accessed through https://safespace.mak.ac.ug/
Inclusive Information materials in Braille Print and large Font are available for persons with Visual impairments.
