Panel Synopsis:
Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has faced severe challenges whose origins stem in the larger inequalities that have prompted previous wars in Sudan's history. International media has rightly pointed to the human cost: an estimated 150,000-400,000 people have died as a result of the war, close to 15 million people displaced in 2024 due to the conflict, and roughly half the population of Sudan facing acute insecurity. Yet this focus on the damage has obscured the longer and more recent historical context that prompted the outbreak of war. In particular, these narratives have elided the 2019 revolution that ousted Omer ElBashir from power and led to protracted tension between a fractious civilian block demanding civilian government and a divided security apparatus which ultimately fractured and initiated the current war.
Drawing on this recent history and the political economy that these dynamics have established or maintained, this panel seeks to get beyond media headlines. It will address international discourses on Sudan and the ways that media coverage has framed the narrative of the war, then contextualize the war in Sudan's recent history. In the process, it will point to the ways that the war has been internationalized, with regional powers intervening directly and providing material support to the armed parties. It will also highlight the agency and activity of the Sudanese communities, who have mobilized to ensure community survival drawing on the organizing tactics and networks established since 2019.
