Makerere University will host the 3rd Edition of the Kwame Nkrumah Day celebrations on Friday, 26th September 2025, at 2:00 PM, at the Yusuf Lule Teaching Facility. The Guest of Honour will be Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, the Minister of Internal Affairs.

The event is organized by the Nkrumah Hall leadership, in partnership with the Makerere University Advancement Office, as part of the University’s tradition of honoring Africa’s great thinkers and leaders.

Kwame Nkrumah Day is observed in recognition of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (1909–1972), Ghana’s first Prime Minister and later President, who led his country to independence in 1957—the first sub-Saharan African nation to break free from colonial rule. He was a visionary Pan-Africanist, advocating for political and economic independence, African unity, and the establishment of institutions such as the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the fore runner of today’s African Union.

Nkrumah’s leadership was marked by his relentless pursuit of industrialization, education, and social reforms, which made him a symbol of liberation and progress across the continent. His legacy continues to inspire movements for self-determination, resilience, and continental solidarity.

The Deputy Dean of Students and Warden, Nkrumah Hall, Mr. Rodney Rugyema, has extended a cordial invitation to the entire Makerere community and the general public. The commemoration is open not only to residents and alumni of Nkrumah Hall but also to all students, Pan-Africanists, advocates of development, and distinguished guests from across political and non-political spheres.

This year’s commemoration will run under the theme:
“Transforming Young African Minds: Lessons We Can Draw from Kwame Nkrumah’s Ideas.”

The theme underscores the vital role of young people in shaping Africa’s future and the importance of learning from Nkrumah’s visionary leadership, resilience, and foresight in the struggle for an independent and prosperous Africa.

The gathering will provide an opportunity to reflect on Nkrumah’s visionary leadership and its relevance to Africa’s progress, particularly in empowering young minds to actively shape the continent’s future.
