The East African Teacher Education Symposium (EATES) is an annual international forum dedicated to educational research in the field of teacher education. While the symposium focuses on the status and advancement of teacher education in Uganda, it also embraces a broader regional outlook, encompassing the East African Community—Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, DR Congo, Somalia, and Tanzania.

EATES seeks to showcase high-quality research that is relevant to teacher education both in Uganda and across the East African region. It also serves as a dynamic international platform for fostering new research initiatives and collaborative efforts in teacher education.

The 3rd East African Teacher Education Symposium will be hosted at Makerere University Campus School of Public Health Auditorium Next to Eastern Gate,  from Wednesday 9th March 2025 to Thursday 10th March 2025. This year’s theme, “Curriculum Development and Decolonization of Education in East Africa,” invites proposals exploring critical topics pertinent to teacher education across the region.

This theme encourages the development of thought-provoking presentations that are directly relevant to East African teacher education. It opens space for a wide array of inquiries—from in-depth, subject-specific research to comprehensive analyses across educational levels, including primary, secondary, and higher education. The symposium also welcomes comparative cross-national studies that illuminate unique pedagogical contexts, as well as historical investigations into curriculum evolution and the pressing discourse of decolonization.

At the heart of this theme lies the recognition that education—shaped by both historical and contemporary global forces—must be understood in context. By exploring these influences, EATES 2025 aims to foster a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the most promising paths for educational reform and growth in East Africa.

In addition to proposals aligned with the main theme, the symposium will also consider other abstracts that offer strong relevance to teacher education.

We invite you to join us on this collective journey to unpack the complexities of educational transformation, explore innovative pathways, and help shape a forward-thinking, contextually grounded East African educational future.
