On 18th July 2022, as part of the centennial celebrations, Makerere University hosted an Annual Nelson Mandela Public Lecture on 18th July 2022, in commemoration of “The Legacy of Nelson Mandela and the Role of higher education in the African Union Agenda 2063.”

This year marks exactly 10 years since the passing of Nelson Mandela Madiba. As such, the Nelson Mandela Foundation has decided to commemorate the occasion with the theme, “10-year remembrance of Nelson Mandela”. It is under this overarching theme, that the South African High Commission in Uganda in partnership with Makerere University have decided to host a three-fold commemorative series of events to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela Madiba.

This year, we will host a 2023 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on the 20th of July 2023, under the theme, “Positioning Africa for Climate Justice and Food Security,” and a commemorative dinner on the same day, for distinguished Guests from South Africa and beyond. The Public lecture will be preceded by a community service at the Makerere University Primary School on the 15th of July 2023.
