The Great Lakes Center for the Study of the United States, established within the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Makerere University, was officially launched on 25 March 2025 by H.E. William Popp, United States Ambassador to Uganda. Supported by the U.S. Mission in Kampala, the Centre promotes research, knowledge exchange, and academic partnerships between the United States and the Great Lakes region, with a particular focus on governance, democracy, science, technology, and sustainable development.
The Centre is currently undertaking a pioneering research project on Uganda–United States relations since 1945 under the framework of Civilizational Relationality. This work will culminate in a scholarly publication that positions Makerere University as a regional leader in U.S.–Africa studies.
