Event Details

The African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Data Intensive Sciences - Uganda (ACE-Uganda), Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), Makerere University will over two weeks (17–28 August 2026) host the ABI Bioinformatics Summer School.

During the Summer School, researchers from across Africa will engage in hands-on training designed to strengthen practical bioinformatics skills for genomic research.

The programme covers:
▫️ Linux command line and HPC environments
▫️ Data analysis and visualisation in R or Python
▫️ Next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows
▫️ Specialised tracks in human genomics, pathogen genomics, and metagenomics

This initiative is delivered in partnership with African Bioinformatics Institute (ABI), Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and ACE Uganda.

Participants will gain practical experience with bioinformatics computational resources, tools, and workflows; helping them better execute, interpret, and communicate genomic analyses.

Why this matters: Bioinformatics capacity is critical for the region's ability to track disease outbreaks, understand drug resistance, and advance genomic research. By investing in hands-on training, we are building the skills needed to address pressing health challenges.

We look forward to two weeks of learning, collaboration, and discovery.
