Makerere University has received special funding from the Government of Uganda to support high impact Research and Innovations that inform national development priorities. This first of the kind initiative arose from a series of discussions between the top university management and Government. The fund illustrates the increasing importance that the Government attaches to Research and Innovation as a catalyst to Uganda’s march towards Middle Income Status.

The three objectives of the fund include;

  1. Develop and fund a robust research agenda based on National development priorities identified from academia, government, implementing partners and industries.
  2. Support the dissemination of high quality research and innovations in a way that impacts on development policies and programs.
  3. Support the growth of research leadership capacity in the university

Since FY 2019/20, the fund has supported 588 multidisciplinary research and innovation projects across
the various colleges. The College of Computing has obtained 21 grants across the two financial years.
